peter singer is a bum loving ethicist

I'm not 100% sure if this is the book, but I read an except of Peter Singer's latest in the weekend newspapers. In it, he talks about people who are trying to lessen their impact on the world by reducing consumption. So, they eat food from dumpsters - eggs, not even expired, white bread that has just gone off, avoid the orange bags, it's spoilt meat - behind supermarkets. Singer follows this group of people, they have no home, so they squat in an abandoned factory. Most of them - surprise surprise - don't work and don't want to. This way, they say they are doublely free - free of consumption and have free time to do what they want. Hello??? They are bums!!! Bums who meet everyday on the street corners. And unlike people who are down on their luck, these people are happy to be bums forever. I can't believe Singer's managed to defend and philosophise the bum lifestyle into something we can aspire to...

Peter Singer has defended bestiality, so defending the bum lifestyle isn't a stretch.
i wish i could be happy being a bum forever. but alas, i turned 30 and thought perhaps it's time to start showing signs of dotage- so i've just given up my 18-hr work week to become a regular working stiff.
for more alternatives to the grounding principles of society we're so used to, read bataille's proposal for a 'general economy' based on excess and exuberance rather than utility.
forgot to include title of bataille's book in last reply. it's 'the accursed share vol I'.
