the devil wears prada

This is a non-book post (although the movie was made from a book) and it is basically the sex in the city movie with an extra dose of mean. One of the writers used to write for sex in the city and so did the fashion designer for the series, Pat Field. She has done an amazing job, cos everyone looks fabulous and their budget was tiny, so everything was borrowed. I guess you can do that when you have valentino or lagerfield on speed dial. OMG the shoes, the shoes...

It starts off with a cliche, unfashionable but smart girl Andy (Anne Hathaway, dead ringer for a young Charlotte) lands a job at fashion magazine runway, when all she really wants is to be a serious journalist (snicker). The best thing about the movie is Meryl Streep, who plays the evil editor boss, based on the editor of vogue ms nuclear wintour. Okay her real name is Anne Wintour. The writer of the book worked at vogue for a year too, which makes you wonder. Anyhow, Meryl is Miranda Priestley (anyone remember reading boring JB Priestley in sec school? ghastly) who is so deliciously sarcastic that it makes you shiver. The kind of boss that purrs threats and expects you to give up your personal life and deliver the impossible in 5 minutes.

It is about corruption, what you are willing to do to get the job done and even though it ended predicably, there was still enough guessing until the end, will Andy succumb and turn to the dark side of free outfits and handbags?
