Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire...
...is screening soon! I'm so sorry to get all excited about that but I'm in a modern culture desert here. The poster looks really cool too; they've all got this wind-blown, slightly grimy battle look and Harry Potter looks all grown up now. Erm...but can someone please kindly briefly remind me of what happened in the book?

the book starts with a scene in the riddle house. voldemort and wormtail are talking, spied on by an old man. nagini the snake discovers the old muggle and voldemort lets the snake kill him as its reward. harry sort of "dreams" this incident and wakes up with a searing pain in his scar.
harry spends his hols at privet drive as usual but the weasleys come to take him to the burrow (the part with mrs weasley's stamp covered envelop, the weasleys arriving thru the dursleys' fake fireplace and dudley being tricked to eat fred and george's ton-tongue toffee will unfortunately not be in the movie).
the dursleys will not be in the movie at all and i think it prob starts with the quidditch world cup (i hope they have a scene with the omniocculars!) where the deatheaters decide to assert themselves by bullying a poor muggle family and barty crouch jr, disgusted with what he sees as pathetic cowardly-feeble action, sets off the dark mark. winky the house elf is found stunned nearby with the wand (harry's lost one) that set off the mark.
we're then introduced to the name of rita skeeter in the report of this event which unfairly undermines ministry wizards' handling of the whole affair.
the trio goes back to hogwarts to discover that the triwizards tournament is going to take place at hogwarts. however, only wizards aged 17 (i think, can't recall) are allowed to take part. there's going to be a scene in the movie showing the twins' failed attempt to get near the goblet to drop their names.
anyway, students from beaubatons and durmstrang arrive and the goblet picks a legitimate champion from each school. a 4th champion surprisingly was chosen and unsurprisingly turns out to be harry.
right, i'm not getting abridged enough! ok, rest of book -
task 1- the dragons
task 2- the egg puzzle. champions have to go under the sea, find the merpeople and rescue the person who means most to them
task 3- champions have to search for the cup within a labyrinth where obstacles are thrown their way to complicate the task. harry and cedric get to the cup and decide to be joint winners. when they touch the cup which turns out to be a portkey, they are taken to the riddles' house where deatheaters are waiting.
here, the important part of voldemort's "re-embodiment" to note is that harry's blood is a required ingredient - something that causes dumbledore to give a pleased smile when he hears about this later. anyway, when harry and voldemort's wands touch in combat, they sort of repel each other, being "sister" wands made from feathers of the same phoenix, fawkes. ghosts of people voldemort killed with his wand start to reappear, including his parents. they help harry fend off voldemort. harry manages to reach the portkey with cedric's body to escape.
but the danger is not over as the fake madeye leads harry away. luckily, dumbledore and some other teachers arrive in time to prevent harry from being harmed. barty crouch jr is given veritaserum to tell the whole truth. he is taken away and to dumbledore's anger and disappointment, cornelius fudge has crouch delivered to the dementors to be subject to the dementors' kiss. fudge then tries to shush up whole affair about voldemort's return.
what goes on in between the tasks at school:
defence against the dark arts classes with barty crouch jr disguised as madeye moody.
rita skeeter writing irresponsible articles making life hell for harry. hagrid and hermione also become her victims.
hagrid gets a love interest - madame maxime
fleur delacour
harry's scar hurting him.
his communication with sirius. unfortunately this will not be developed too much in the film. gary oldman says he appears only in one scene where we'll see just his head in the fireplace. no scene where padfoot goes to hogsmeade.
the yule ball where it becomes for the 1st time rather explicitly clear that there's going to be a ron-hermione romance. anyway, hermione's viktor krum's date. ron and harry are appalling dates to the patil twins. we see harry having his first crush - on cho chang who does not become an irritant and a bore til bk 5.
some stuff not in the book will be in the movie from what i gather from the websites. one which i really disagree with is how the twins go round taking bets for the triwizard tournement and are hoping harry will not win cos they are not betting on him. that is just totally out of character!
forgot to add, we also get clues to snape's history as a death eater.
PHWAAAAA.... that was highly comprehensive indeed. thank you very very much. I dont think I could possibly have a clearer idea of what happens in the book, short of reading the book. did you scour ALL the harry potter websites to find those bits of trivia about the movie?
i surf leaky cauldron regularly!
and i also just reread all six books in the recent mths, that's why i actually can remember a fair bit of the stuff that goes on. the last time you read bk 4 was probably 5yrs ago?
